Installation of Universal Joint Driveshafts

Installation of the Universal Joint driveshaft is a critical step to insure personal safety and increase the life expectancy of the driveline. Listed below are a few procedures that each installation should follow:
  • Mating surfaces of the shaft flanges, drive unit, and driven unit should be thoroughly cleaned and free of burrs, rust and foreign materials that may inhibit proper seating of the respective pilots.
  • Mating surfaces of the drive and driven units should be checked for run-out both radial and axial.
  • Universal joint lugs or ears must be in phase. To be in phase the yokes on the shaft must be aligned in the same plane. Shafts manufactured by Renold Ajax are stamped with alignment arrows to alleviate this problem.

  • Flange fasteners used to bolt mating surfaces must be Grade 8 or higher to provide secure fastening strength. (Refer to Bolt Torque Chart).
  • U-joints and slip splines must be lubricated after installation. (Refer to lubrication section).
  • Driveshafts rotating in exposed areas must be properly shielded to prevent personnel from getting in contact with the spinning shaft.
