Universal Joint Driveshaft Maximum Tubing RPM Critical Speeds are shown for standard size tubing in the graph below. For other tubing sizes or lengths not shown, the "MAXIMUM SAFE OPERATING SPEED" is based on a value 75% of the theoretical maximum speed. The Maximum speed is determined by the following formula: ![]() Critical Speeds for driveshaft tube sizing also occur at 1/2 the maximum safe operating speed. Speeds to avoid in this range are 8% higher or lower than the actual value.
