INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION

STANDARD

HEAVY DUTY

HIGH MISALIGNMENT
SERIES D-100
These instructions apply to standard, heavy duty and Series D-100 self-aligning couplings. Grease lubrication is recommended for all normal applications.

Oil lubrication is recommended for applications not equipped with thrust bearings - Example sleeve bearing motor.

For slow speed, high temperature, severe environmental or similar applications consult our office. Gear couplings should be checked and relubricated at least every 6 months. Severe environments may require a shorter period.

OILS

Use a good mineral base gear oil, SAE-140, #8 AGMA or heavier - example SAE-140. Viscosity no lighter than 150 SSU (Saybolt Seconds Universal) and no heavier than 1000 SSU at 210°F (100°C). When using oil, consult us.

  1. Inspect and clean all parts.
  2. Apply a light coat of selected lubricant to seals and sleeve ring gear teeth.
  3. Place sleeve ring gear over shaft end.
  4. Coat shaft with anti-galling compound. Insert key in keyway and check to assure a snug side-to-side fit. Coat key.
[For keyless fits follow, machinery manufacturers instructions for preparation and mounting].
  5. Heat hubs in oil or oven to approx. 300°F. (148°C); do not exceed 350°F (176°C). Slip hubs on to shaft to correct location. Do not allow seals to contact heated hub.
[Clearance fits, only used for light duty applications, are provided with set screws --- tighten firmly ---].
  6. Align equipment, using straight edge end feeler gage or dial indicator. Alignment and shaft gap must be within design limits of coupling and should be best economically possible.
  7. Coat coupilings with selected lubricant.
  8. Engage hub end sleeve gear teeth.
[O-Ring Style Seals, ergage hub by carefully forcing seal on to hub seal surface.
Lip Style Seals, require blunt probe to carefully work lip on to hub seal surface.]
  9. Inspect flange gasket for damage. Clean flanges and insert gasket between flanges.
[If gasket is damaged, permatex or equal gasket compound can be used.)
  10. Draw flanges together, positioning lube holes of 90° apart. Align gasket bolt holes with fange bolt holes. Insert and tighten bolts, lockwashers and nuts provided.
  11. Position coupling so two lube holes 180° apart are horisontal. Remove these two lube plugs. Apply lubricant in one hole until discharged from hole at 180°. Replace and tighten plugs.
NOTE: In case of floating shaft, spacer or similar type applications each end must be lubricated.
When using oil, position one lube plug at top and fill with specified volume. To relubricate, drain and refill with new oil.
  12. Recheck all mechanical connections to make certain they have been tightened. Install coupling guard.
WARNING: Rotating equipment must be provided with a suitable guard
before operating or injury may result. Check applicable code.
